Enhancing Diesel Engine Reliability: The Role of Centrifugal Filters in Power Generation

Reliability and efficiency are crucial in power generation operations. Diesel engines power backup generators and prime movers, but maintaining their performance requires effective filtration. Contaminants in lubrication oil and fuel cause wear, unplanned maintenance, and costly breakdowns. Centrifugal filters effectively remove harmful particles, extending engine life and reducing maintenance costs.

The Importance of Diesel Engine Reliability

Diesel generators provide essential power across industries. Unplanned downtime disrupts production, increases costs, and compromises safety. Clean lubrication oil is vital in preventing friction, reducing wear, and regulating temperature within engines. Without effective filtration, contaminants accumulate, accelerating degradation.

Impact of Contaminants on Engine Performance

Engines degrade due to friction and combustion byproducts. Contaminants like soot, metal particles, and sludge circulate in the lubrication system, accelerating wear. Standard filters capture larger particles, but smaller abrasive particles still pass through the filter mesh and cause damage. Repeated oil heating and cooling create harmful deposits, shortening engine life and increasing fuel consumption.

How Centrifugal Filtration Works

Centrifugal filters (also known as; oil separators, bypass filters and pressure-driven centrifuges) use high-speed rotation to separate contaminants from oil. Unlike traditional filters, they remove even the smallest particles without clogging, resulting in cleaner oil, improved performance, and extended maintenance intervals.

Benefits of Centrifugal Filters

  • Extended Oil Life – Longer oil change intervals.
  • Lower Maintenance Costs – Less wear on engine components.
  • Improved Efficiency – Cleaner oil ensures better lubrication.
  • Eco-Friendly – Less waste oil disposal.

Overview: MAN B&W 6L28/32HP on a RORO Vehicle Carrier A client undertook a trial period with our IOW MP400 Centrifuge , which was installed as a retrofit on a MAN B&W 6L28/32HP engine. The objective was to assess the performance differences and determine whether IOW Group's separation capabilities could enhance engine reliability and performance. Prior to the installation of IOW Group's MP400 , the engine had been in operation for over 67,000 hours, rendering it highly susceptible to wear and degradation. Consequently, it becomes imperative to remove as much harmful particulates as possible to prolong engine life, as well as extend primary filter life to minimize maintenance requirements.
