5 ways to Improve Oil Filtration & Machine Reliability

Organizations worldwide are constantly striving to improve efficiency, productivity, and profit within their chosen business sectors. With tight margins and increasing competition, many business owners are turning their focus to reviewing their lubrication management procedures. With measurable results and actual savings, the benefits of transforming their lubrication programs are undeniable!

Here we look at five simple steps that should be taken to improve machine reliability through more efficient oil filtration and proper management of lubricants.

Way One

Conduct regular oil analysis and set oil cleanliness targets.

Oil analysis is an excellent tool that can be used to make maintenance decisions and gauge the overall health of your machine. Setting an oil cleanliness target is vital to ensure the steps you are making are paying off. Achieving the desired ISO cleanliness levels can be costly, but the benefits gained are much more than the initial investment.

Having measurable data to review means you can calculate the longevity and productivity of your machinery. Using the Noria Machinery Life Extension calculator, we were able to determine that ISO cleanliness codes had improved so much when an IOW oil cleaning centrifuge was installed that the engine lifespan was tripled! Find out the full story here.

Top tip: Make sure you select the proper oil analysis test to align with your reliability goals.

Way Two

Keep tabs on oil filters and their performance.

It's all well and good to buy top-of-the-range equipment, but what advantage is it if you can't see or measure its performance? How do you know your oil filter is filtering efficiently or if it needs servicing? The answer... You don't!

Remote monitoring helps to move to a more reliability focused maintenance strategy and the benefits of this technology can be hugely beneficial with far reaching advantages to the organizations. An IOW oil cleaning centrifuge is the only oil centrifuge to offer a choice of remote monitoring units to allow greater insight for the operator. Find out more here.

With the ability to view live data on the oil centrifuge performance and the capability to set alarms based on various factors, IOW oil cleaning centrifuges increase efficiency while utilizing fewer resources. Recording this data can help create further savings by identifying trends and can also assist in setting accurate future lubrication goals.

Top tip: IOW Group offer monitoring units (SCUs) that can provide live data directly to your smartphone via the CentriClean App or via Modbus to integrate with existing systems.

Way Three

Find the source of contamination in your machine.

Contaminants in lube oil are inevitable, but contamination control is an integral part of a proactive maintenance strategy. The first step in controlling these harmful particles is finding the source. Whether it happens through incorrect storage, in transit, ineffective seals, or a crack in the engine, it is important to find and fix these ingresses.

When an IOW oil cleaning centrifuge was installed onboard a CMA CGM vessel, oil analysis was conducted on the extra soot that had been removed. Combined with a short investigation, the engineering team found a potentially lethal source of asphaltenes entering the lubricating system. This was corrected, and the IOW centrifuge filter effectively contained the asphaltenes. Read the full results of this installation here.

Top tip: Oil analysis is a crucial step in identifying, sourcing, and eliminating sources of contamination.

Way Four

Understand filter efficiency.

All oil filters remove contaminants from the lube oil, but how much, how quickly, and what other advantages does it have? When selecting and buying a new oil filter, it's important to work smart. Do your homework and learn what impacts efficiency in your organization. Investing in the right product will save time further down the line and help you achieve your lubrication goals faster.

Oil cleaning centrifuges are considered the most efficient and fast return-on-investment oil filter you can install. Harnessing centrifugal force to draw out sub-micron particles, centrifuge oil filters improve lube oil quality and contain contaminants within the centrifuge bowl ready for disposal. Previously not updated since the 1950s, oil cleaning centrifuges have now been updated and revolutionized by IOW Group's new range of centrifuge filters.

The IOW oil cleaning centrifuges are patent-protected and have unique features to improve efficiency. A central bowl disc stack helps draw out finer particles from the lube oil. The IOW centrifuge filter spins 15-30% faster than any existing competitor models meaning faster and better separation. With externally tested by Lloyds London, the IOW MP centrifugal oil filter was proven to remove more contaminants from lube oil than our competitor. Along with the centrifuge filter, IOW Group offers a choice of remote monitoring units that can extend the reach of efficiency through your organization to create great savings and help in achieving future reliability goals. Find out more about the technology here.

Top tip: When purchasing your new centrifugal oil filter look for case studies, customer results, and external testing of the filter

Way Five

Make machine modifications.

Many modifications can be made to engines and machinery to improve reliability. Often filters and applications that come fitted as standard when purchasing an engine are not the best options for efficiency. By incorporating high-performance oil filters, pumps, and back flushing filters into your contamination control strategy, you are investing in the longevity of your machinery and ultimately enhancing their profit-making ability.

IOW oil cleaning centrifuges are designed to retrofit to existing pipework and will fit onto your existing mount. Upgrading your centrifuge filter couldn't be easier. IOW Group manufactures a variety of pumps and filtration accessories that work together to provide enhanced oil filtration. At a power plant in Ecuador, we replaced Mann + Hummel filters with an IOW MP600 oil cleaning centrifuge. By choosing to upgrade their centrifuge filter, approximately $17,000 USD per engine was saved. Amongst other beneficial results, we managed to help this customer achieve lubrication targets and keep TBN (The Base Number) below 1%. Read the full story here.

Top tip: Ensure any machine modifications made are working towards, and aligned with, your reliability goals.

Improving machinery reliability and efficiency is an ongoing challenge where the plan needs to be constantly adjusted and adapted to maximize equipment output. Thanks to automated equipment, more sophisticated monitoring, and more advanced engineering, it is now more attainable than ever to achieve lubrication excellence and grow your organization into an efficiency-based working environment.

Overview: MAN B&W 6L28/32HP on a RORO Vehicle Carrier A client undertook a trial period with our IOW MP400 Centrifuge , which was installed as a retrofit on a MAN B&W 6L28/32HP engine. The objective was to assess the performance differences and determine whether IOW Group's separation capabilities could enhance engine reliability and performance. Prior to the installation of IOW Group's MP400 , the engine had been in operation for over 67,000 hours, rendering it highly susceptible to wear and degradation. Consequently, it becomes imperative to remove as much harmful particulates as possible to prolong engine life, as well as extend primary filter life to minimize maintenance requirements.
